PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing stainless steel excellent in antibacterial properties and corrosion resistance. SOLUTION: A stainless cold rolled steel sheet contg. 0.001 to 0.10 wt.% Ag is subjected to annealing treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere and is thereafter immersed into an aq.soln. of nitrohydrofluoric acid contg. 0.0001 to 1.0 mol/l silver ions, 20 to 200 g/l nitric acid and 5 to 100 g/l hydrofluoric acid which does not form a complex with metallic ions. Or, after annealing treatment and descaling treatment, immersing treatment in which it is immersed into a soln. of nitric acid contg. 0.0001 to 1.0 mol/l silver ions or a soln. of sodium hydroxide contg. 0.0001 to 1.0 mol/l silver ions may be executed.
