PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tank used for melting glass where molten glass is heated directly by electricity while keeping the molten glass at as high temperatures as possible particularly in the purification region and restraining the corrosion of the heating electrodes and the tank at a low level, and to provide a method for melting the glass. SOLUTION: This glass melting tank 1 provided with at least one pair of heating electrodes projecting into the molten glass is constituted so that at least one molten glass region 2 is made into a region 3 having a small cross section and at least one heating electrode 7 exists in front of the region 3 and an electrode 7 exists at the back of the region 3 to raise the temperature of the molten glass existing in the region 3.
