PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of chipping, peeling, or scuffing of a nitrided layer of a lower layer even when an initial running-in layer is rapidly worn out in an internal combustion engine working under a high temperature and high load condition like a diesel engine. SOLUTION: This piston ring for an internal combustion engine comprises composite coat with a double structure consisting of a nitrided layer 2 and a silicon nitride particle dispersed nickel-cobalt-phosphorus alloy composite plating layer 3 formed thereon at least on an outer circumferential sliding surface. Since residual compressive stress of 400 MPa or more is imparted to the nitrided layer 2 by shot peening, the piston ring for the internal combustion engine with an excellent crack resistance and peeling resistance can be provided.
