PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a stainless steel rail usable for a rail such as a light rail capable of using even in a highly corrosive environment having and to provide a method for producing it. SOLUTION: This stainless steel rail has a componential compsn. contg., by weight, 0.04 to 0.08% C, <=1.00% Si, <=2.00% Mn, <=0.045% P, <0.025% S, 8.00 to 10.50% Ni, 18.00 to 20.00% Cr and 0.05 to 0.10% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, has >=637 N/mm2 tensile strength and also has a structure in which grain boundaries are free from grooves in a 10% oxalic acid etch test.
