PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multilayer sandwich complex having specificities in a catalytic function, an optically responsive function, magnetism, etc., by alternately combining a monolayer organometallic complex with a bonding metal atom to constitute a one-dimensional multilayer sandwich complex. SOLUTION: The objective multilayer sandwich complex is constituted by alternately combining a monolayer organometallic complex 1 with a bonding metal atom 4 and is obtained e.g. by the gas phase reaction of a monolayer organometallic complex 1 [e.g. ferrocene (Fe(C5H5)2), etc.], having originally a sandwich structure with a bonding metal atom 4 (e.g. V, Fe, Co, etc.), preferably after their separate laser vaporization. In the above gas phase reaction, laser radiation energy in the laser vaporization of a monolayer organometallic complex 1 is preferably set to be <=300 mJ/mm2 per one pulse on the surface of a specimen.
