An article comprising a base and formed on the surface thereof a water-repellent film consisting mainly of silicon oxide and having water-repellent groups, characterized in that the water-repellent film contains at least one metal oxide selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide, and boron oxide. The water-repellent film covering the article withstands outdoor use and has high hardness and high performance. Also provided are: a process for highly efficiently producing the article coated with a water-repellent film; and a liquid coating composition for use in producing the article coated with a water-repellent film.
