PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the lowering of apparent density of mixed raw material and to improve the metallization of a product reduced iron by compacting the mixed material at the point of a specified time at the interval from the start of charging to the start of discharging. SOLUTION: The mixed raw material of iron raw material and solid reducing agent is charged into a preheated reducing furnace. At this time, volatile matter is generated from the solid reducing agent and a gap generated with the volatile matter is compacted with compacting rolls, etc. The compactness is executed during the time from 2% to 60% in the case of setting as 100% to the needed point of time from the start of charging to the start of discharging of the mixed raw material. When the relative point of time becomes >=2%, the solid reducing agent is started to express heat softening property, and when the relative point of time becomes 30%, this solid reducing agent is again started to harden and thereby, the softened solid reducing agent can be brought into further contact with the iron raw material by compacting during these relative points of time. Further, when the compactness is again executed during the relative point of time from 30% to 60%, the lowering effect of the gap is improved, and the metallization of the product reduced iron can be improved by improving the thermal conductivity.
