PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new means for expanding the color reproducibility range of a liquid crystal display device equipped with a backlight unit with which white light is achieved by mixing the three colors of blue light, green light, and red light.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a backlight unit, which comprises at least a light-emitting part and an emitted light quantity selective reduction member. The light-emitting part comprises a light source and a wavelength conversion member including a fluorescent material for emitting excited fluorescence with excitation light, and emits blue light, green light having an emission intensity peak with a half width exceeding 50 nm, and red light having an emission intensity peak with a half width exceeding 50 nm, with at least the green light and the red light being emitted by the fluorescent material. The emitted light quantity selective reduction member is positioned on an optical path of the light emitted by the light-emitting part, and has an emitted light quantity selective reduction capability of selectively reducing a quantity of emitted light in a wavelength range of 680-730 nm in the light that is emitted by the light-emitting part and enters the emitted light quantity selective reduction member.
