PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent inconvenience such as a time loss due to the initializing operation or the inserting operation of an image pickup optical system, the consumption of a battery by having a means for invalidating the operation of an initializing means by external operation though the initializing means for initializing the image pickup optical system is in an operating state. SOLUTION: This system has a means for invalidating the operation of an initializing means by external operation though the initializing means for initializing the image pickup optical system is in an operating state. In a digital camera, e.g. when the operation mode of the camera is switched to a photographing mode and a selecting switch 6 is not turned on, a CPU 4 sends a control signal to a motor driver 2 so as to initiatize a photographing lens 1 and drives a motor 2 to move the lens 1 to an initial position. Only if the switch 6 is turned on, the initializing operation of the lens 1 is never executed even when a mode is switched to the image pickup mode with the dial 5.
