PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition which not only has rust-preventive properties but also can impart rust-preventive properties to an existing protective film, such as a coating film, and can prevent the rusting of a metal, such as iron, covered with concrete or the like by incorporating a low-mol.-wt. mercapto compound and/or a sulfide compound into the same. SOLUTION: The mercapto compound is represented by formula I (wherein n is an integer of 1 or higher but not higher than 10; and m is an integer of 2 or higher but not higher than 2n). The sulfide compound is represented by formula II (wherein n is an integer of 1 or higher but not higher than 10; m is an integer of 2 or higher but not higher than 2n; and R' and R" are each independently H or a 10C or lower hydrocarbon group). The compound represented by formula I is preferably cysteamine, and the compound represented by formula II is preferably thiazolidine (R'=H, R"=H), methylthiazolidine (R'=H, R"= CH3) or dimethylthiazolidine (R'=CH3, R"=CH3).
