PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition having high weatherability and low stainability and highly adhesive to coating films formed from various coating materials by including a specific copolymer and an organic hydrazine compound. SOLUTION: This aqueous coating composition is obtained by including (A) a copolymer produced by copolymerization between (i) 5-80 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the formula CH2=CR1-COO-C(CH3)3 (R1 is H or a 1-2C alkyl), (ii) 0.1-10 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the formula (R2 is H or a 1-2C alkyl; X is O or imino; Y is H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon substituent), (iii) 0.1-10 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, (iv) 0.5-10 wt.% of a carbonyl group- or aldehyde group-contg. ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (v) 0-94.3 wt.% of another ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (B) an organic hydrazine compound containing at least two hydrazine residues in an aqueous medium.
