PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture forming device for communicating error information by operating the picture formation and output of error information instead of target picture formation data when any error is generated during picture formation processing, and for easily discriminating the presence of error information communication, and a method for controlling the picture forming device, and a picture forming system. SOLUTION: In the picture forming processing, an error output setting screen is displayed (S502), and a user sets a recording sheet size at the outputting of error information communication (S503). When any error is generated during the picture formation processing (S509), a sheet feeding tray in which recording sheets in a size, based on the set information, are housed is automatically selected (S519), and the error information communication is outputted (S521). Also, it is possible for the user to set the sheet feeding tray and a sheet ejecting tray at the outputting of the error information communication.
