The system consists of a roof (1) having at least two rigid panels (4, 5) which can be moved relative to one another and the vehicle structure. The front and rear panels are linked by two sets of auxiliary arms (18, 19) lying parallel to one another and connected to the front and rear roof panels by pivots (20, 21, 22, 23). When the roof is opened the panels are retracted so that the front panel lies on top of the rear panel and the two are then positioned to the rear of the vehicle passenger compartment by levers (6, 7).
