PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix ink surely to a sheet P regardless of the type of the sheet P or the ink and to obtain an image having high gloss while avoiding offset phenomenon. SOLUTION: An ink jet printer is provided with a fixing section comprising a preheating section 25 and a hot press section. Ink is fixed to a sheet P by hot press at the hot press section and the surface of ink is flattened to set a gloss. The preheating section 25 comprises a light source 41, and a reflector 42. Abrupt temperature rise of the sheet P can be avoided by heating the ink and the sheet P prior to hot press. The reflector 42 is shaped such that the ink and the image receiving layer of the sheet P can be heated uniformly in a specified region with the light from the light source 41 impinging on the sheet P directly and the light impinging on the sheet P through the reflector 42.
