PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording and reproducing device which is not decreased in a utilization efficiency of a tape-like recording medium even if lots of programs are recorded and is easy to use, when recording data on the tape-like recording medium at high density. SOLUTION: This data recording and reproducing device divides data into blocks of a prescribed size and records them; records a data larger than the prescribed size over plural blocks; records data to be temporarily stored from the head position of the tape; and records the data name to be recorded or the information presenting the attribute and the address presenting the recorded position of the data in a non-volatile recording medium in the casing of the tape or in the recording means of this data recording and reproducing device. Moreover, data to be stored for a long term are recorded from the position going back in the direction of the head position from the end position of the tape by the size of the data to be stored when there is no data recorded directly before the final position of the tape, and are recorded from the position going back in the direction of the head position from the head position of the recorded data by the size of the date to be stored when there are data recorded already.
