<p>A leak detection apparatus (20) for a liquid cooling system or circuit (10) used in conjunction with electronics devices operates under operating system pressures that are normally sub-atmospheric. The leak detection apparatus (20) includes a bellows (22) that is in flow communication with the liquid cooling circuit (10). The bellows (22) is operable to expand and contract in response to the normally occurring changes in the temperature and the corresponding operating pressures. The bellows (22) is positioned such that, during normal operation , it does not contact a switch mechanism (24). The presence of a leak within the circuit (10), however, will open the circuit (10) to atmospheric pressure , causing the bellows (22) to expand to a position at which the switch mechanism (24) is actuated by the bellows (22) to signal the presence of a leak. The expansion of the bellows (22) draws the liquid coolant from the circuit (10) and into the bellows (22), thus limiting the loss of coolant fluid from the circuit (10) until the existence of the leak is signaled. The positioning of the switch is such that it is activated by the bellows (22) before the circuit (10) reaches full atmospheric pressure, thus enabling corrective action to be taken before any of the liquid coolant can escape from the circuit (10).</p> |
