PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a coil with good accuracy regarding a recording/reproducing separation type magnetic head having a magnetic circuit miniaturized to realize a high transfer speed. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing a recording/reproducing separation type magnetic head having lower and upper magnetic poles placed oppositely to each other by sandwiching a gap layer in a magnetic recording surface side to constitute a magnetic circuit, an insulating material provided between the lower and upper magnetic poles, and a coil film formed in a groove provided in the insulating material, at least in the step of forming the coil, the insulating material is covered with a polishing stopper film, a coil is formed in the groove provided in the non-magnetic insulating material, and the coil is polished to expose the polishing stopper film.
