PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a birefringent plate by which the characteristic of the birefringent plate obtained after cutting a substrate to which oblique vapor deposition of an optical material is performed is exactly inspected before cutting it into the birefringent plate. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the birefringent plate 1 using an oblique vapor deposition film 6, grooves 4 matched in the size of the birefringent plate 1 are formed in a glass substrate 2 by a groove forming process (process ST3), and then an oblique vapor deposition process (process ST5) is performed, and then the oblique vapor deposition film 6 is formed so that the film is interrupted in the grooves 4. Next, inspection of areas divided by the grooves 4 in the glass substrate 2 is performed and the birefringent plate 1 is obtained by cutting the glass substrate 2 along the grooves 4 in a cutting process (process ST8).
