PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pressing method and a press in which production efficiency is not degraded but improved and the breakage of a press die is prevented. SOLUTION: A light projecting sensor 21a and a light receiving sensor 21b which project and receive the light in an interlocking manner with the movement of an upper die 11 of the press are installed facing each other so that the light is projected and received in the horizontal direction through a lower space corresponding to the thickness of a work 16 provided below the upper die 11 located on the limit movement position. When the light projected by the light projecting sensor 21a cannot be received by the light receiving sensor 21b, it is judged that a work 16 is stuck to the upper die 11, this state is abnormal and the press is to be stopped. When the light projected by the light projecting sensor 21a can be received by the light receiving sensor 21b, it is judge that no work 16 is not stuck to the upper die 11 and this state is normal.
