PURPOSE: To provide a CD-ROM decoder in which work load of a control microcomputer is reduced and control over buffering is surely conducted even when a higher operating speed is desired as a system. CONSTITUTION: A buffering control circuit 43, which constitutes of the CD-ROM decoder, computes the amount of empty capacity (the number of sectors) of a buffer RAM based on a count value CB of a writing sector counter 41 that counts CD-ROM data being buffered into the buffer RAM in terms of a sector unit and a count value CT of a transfer sector counter 42 that counts CD-ROM data being transferred from the CD-ROM data to a host computer in the sector unit. When the amount of the empty capacity becomes not higher than a prescribed capacity, buffering of the CD-ROM data is interrupted. When the amount of the empty capacity reaches the prescribed capacity, the buffering is reopened.
