PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily perform underground connecting work without attaching/ detaching a connecting member for stopping rolling and simplify the structure of the machine body of a shield machine. SOLUTION: An underground joining method for a tunnel is provided with the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth processes. In the first process, a front barrel 1 of a retracting-side shield machine A is fixed through the medium of a shield jack 18 to a segment 19 and a rear barrel 2, and bolts 15 fixing the barrels 1, 2 is removed. In the second process, the front barrel 1 is made to advance relative to the rear barrel 2 by a specified distance under the operation of the shield jack 18. In the third process, a hood part 21 mounted on front part of the front barrel 1 is pushed out forward relative to the front barrel 1 as far as the position to cover the outer periphery of a cutter head 5. In the fourth process, the front barrel 1 is slid rearward while pushing out the hood part 21 forward relative to the rear barrel 2 under the operation of the shield jack 18. In the fifth process, a cutter head of an inserting-side shield machine A is fitted into the inside of the front barrel 1.
