An electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery, which are high in discharge capacity and excellent in cycle characteristics, characterized as including a layer composed of a metal that does not alloy with Li, a layer composed of a metal that alloys with Li and a mixed layer interposed between the layers and composed of these metals.
