PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thermal transfer printer in which high quality printing can be ensured constantly even if the width of an ink ribbon or a sheet to be used is altered. SOLUTION: An optimal drive force for traveling an ink ribbon is preset based on the width information of an ink ribbon and a sheet, an optimal drive force is acquired by retrieving set information based on the width information of a sheet being carried on a sheet carrying passage and the width information of an ink ribbon, and then the drive force of the ink ribbon is regulated such that the ink ribbon is driven with the optimal drive force.
