A thin-film EL device having a functional layer provided between a positive-hole injection electrode and an electron injection electrode and capable of emitting light thanks to an electric field applied by both electrodes, wherein the electron injection electrode or a functional layer contains two or more metals having different work functions, an electron-deficient substance receptive of electrons emitted from a low-work-function metal among the metals, and/or an electron-capturing substance capturing ions of the low-work-function metal. Therefore, degradation of the low-work-function metal is prevented, the luminance of the device is increased, and the life of the device is prolonged.
