PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thin magnetic tape, having improved practical reliability such as traveling durability and having superior electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: A ferromagnetic metal thin film (2), carbon film (3) and lubricant layer (4) are successively formed on one surface of a nonmagnetic substrate (1), and a stainless steel thin film is formed as a reinforcing layer (5) on the other surface to improve the total rigidity of the magnetic recording medium. The lubricant layer (4) is formed, by using a lubricant containing compounds (I) selected from fluorine-containing monocarboxylic acids, having a perfluoroalkyl group or perfluoropolyether group and having an alkyl group or alkenyl group in the molecule; or in addition to the compounds selected from the group (I), a lubricant containing compounds (II) selected from perfluoropolyether compounds, having polar groups at both ends of the molecule and compounds (III) selected from among fluorine-containing carboxylates having fluorine-containing organic groups in the molecule. |
