PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to inspect the state of a work coated with a coating material without fail even in the case in which the work and the coating material with which it is coated have the same or close colors or external disturbing light is present. SOLUTION: This method comprises illuminating that part of a work 1 which is coated with a coating material 2 by means of a means 11 that emits light in a wavelength region in which the absorbance by the work is high as illuminating light, leading the reflected light to an image pick-up means 12 after it is passed through a means for filtering light in the above wavelength region, photographing that part of the work 1 which is coated with the material 2 by means of the means 12 to obtain an image in which that area coated with the material 2 is represented by white pixels, and that area of the work 1 which is not coated with the material 2 is represented by black pixels, and inspecting the white pixel area of the image.
