PURPOSE: A method for operating an exterior keyboard in a portable terminal is provided so that a user can use various supplemental services of a mobile system using an exterior keyboard connected to a portable terminal. CONSTITUTION: A portable phone judges that an exterior keyboard is connected to a receptacle terminal when signals of '0' and '1' are respectively inputted through EDS(External Device Sensor) terminals #0 and #1(S100). Then the portable terminal judges whether the exterior keyboard is a continuously connected state or an initially connected state. In case that the exterior keyboard is the initially connected state, the portable terminal scans a key button signal supplied from the exterior keyboard after delaying it for the first setting time(S110). The key code value supplied from the exterior keyboard is inputted through the UI(User Interface) task of the portable phone. An OS(Operating System) analyzes and processes the key code value through an MC(Main Control) task. Afterwards, in case that a telephone directory registration mode is selected(S120), the OS feeds back to the scanning step(S110) after storing a telephone number inputted from the exterior keyboard and an associated name in an allocated memory domain(S170).
