PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an engine with a variable valve system, capable of preventing acceleration shock while suppressing an abrupt increase in torque during acceleration without worsening fuel consumption or combustion condition. SOLUTION: During the deceleration of a vehicle, the phase angle of an intake cam shaft is previously controlled to be closer to a phase lag side than a target phase angle based on a map (Step S8). By holding the phase angle for a preset time even after starting reacceleration (Step S12, 14), torque is suppressed during reacceleration. Torque suppressing operation at this time is effected by the backflow of part of an intake air to an intake side with a delayed closing timing for an intake valve and then a decrease in volume efficiency with a decrease in intake air amount. Therefore, there is no bad effect such as spark timing retard resulting in worsened fuel consumption or combustion condition.
