PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image communication equipment for performing data communication under a contract with a service provider capable of surely performing the data communication at the time of responding to an incoming call from the service provider by a data MODEM, and surely performing a facsimile protocol at the time of performing facsimile reception and a method for controlling the image communication equipment. SOLUTION: At the time of detecting a calling signal, whether it is necessary to respond to it using a data communication protocol by a data MODEM or using a facsimile communication protocol by a facsimile MODEM is decided based on the detected caller telephone number information.
