PURPOSE: A large scale flat display device having surface electron source and a method of driving the same are provided to facilitate large scale display manufacture and improve uniformity of contrast. CONSTITUTION: A flat display device comprises a back plate(8), a cathode electrode, a surface electron source, grid plates(6), a pair of grid electrodes, and a face plate(10). A gate electrode is formed on the back plate. The cathode electrode is formed on the gate electrode. The surface electron source is formed on the cathode electrode and made of field emission materials. The grid plates are space from the back plate and includes a plurality of apertures corresponding to the pixel area. The grid electrodes are formed on one surface of the grid plates respectively. The face plate is spaced from the grid plates and includes a phosphor film and a metal film.
