PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for driving a record carrier with a specific structure after simply authenticating it. SOLUTION: This invention provides the method and device for driving a record carrier that includes a step of authenticating the record carrier in advance on the basis of it as to whether or not history information including a drive date and time and an identifier particular to a driver driving the record carrier with desired data stored can be recorded on the record carrier under prescribed conditions and a step of deciding the drive of the record carrier on the basis of the result of the authentication step.
