PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording in which the electromagnetic conversion characteristics, particularly the high- density recording characteristics are improved and durability performance is practically sufficient. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having a substantially nonmagnetic base layer and a magnetic layer containing hexagonal ferrite powder dispersed in a binder successively formed on a supporting body, the magnetic porosity in the magnetic layer ranges from 15 to 30 vol.%, the variation rate of the thickness of the magnetic layer is <=30%, and the average surface roughness Ra in the center surface of the magnetic layer ranges from 0.5 to 4 nm.
