PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device that realizes a bright, a high-resolution and homogeneous display, and reduction of its size and cost. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device comprises: a light source 1; an image display panel 8, having a plurality of pixel regions capable of modulating a light individually; optical control means 4-6 for condensing the light from the light source 1 to the corresponding pixel regions in accordance with wavelength regions; and optical systems 9, 11 for forming an image on a projected face 13 with the light modulated by the image display panel 8. The device further comprises: a circuit generating the data of a plurality of sub-frame images from the data from the individual frame images composing the image so that the sub-frame images may be displayed on the image display panel in a time-sharing manner; and an image shift element 10 for shifting the selected sub-frame image on the projected face. The same region on the projected face 13 is sequentially irradiated with beams of light which belong to different wavelength ranges modulated by the different pixel regions of the image display panel 8.
