PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator which can suppress the irradiation loss of an illumination optical system to the minimum, efficiently guide luminous flux from a light source to an object to thereby easily provide a good image, and to provide an optical instrument using the same. SOLUTION: The illuminator which irradiates the object with the luminous flux from a light source means, includes the light source means, a first optical member which reflects the luminous flux diffused in a direction opposite to the object from the light source means, a second optical member which is placed at a position between the first optical member and the first light source and has an incident plane opposed to the light source means, and a third optical member which is placed at a position a fixed space apart from and opposite to the light emitting surface of the second optical member. The reflective surface of the second optical member transforms the luminous flux from the light source means into compressed light, and the light-emitting surface of the third optical member is provided with a portion having a diffusion characteristic. The space between the second optical member and the third optical members is variable.
