PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator having a form of a shingle-shaft multi-car, reducing a space required for installing driving machines, and facilitating the installation. SOLUTION: This elevator is provided with a first car 5 and a second car 6 having a common prescribed path 4 of a hoistway 1, a first balance weight 7 for the first car 5, and a second balance weight 9 for the second car 6. The first driving machine 11 is installed in an upper side of the hoistway 1, and a first main rope 14 connected to the first car 5 and the first balance weight 7 is wound around it. The second driving machine 15 is installed in the lower side of the hoistway 1, the both of the second car 6 and the second balance weight 9 are connected to each other, and the second main rope 21 suspending the both via pulleys 17 and 19 in the upper part of the hoistway 1 is wound around it. This constitution can distribute and contract occupation spaces for installing the driving machines so as to reduce the restriction for installing the driving machines and reduce the cost for installing the driving machines.
