PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically stop an engine without strongly operating a foot brake, and to prevent the wasting automatic engine stop by avoiding an automatic stop of the engine in response to the operating condition before the engine is automatically stopped, and to restart the engine to an idling rotation without operating a separate switch nor operating an acceleration pedal to race the engine when restarting the engine in the engine control for automatic stop. SOLUTION: An acceleration pedal range detector detects that a foot of a driver is not put on the acceleration pedal, and when a gear shift lever is positioned at a neutral position or a parking position, the engine is automatically stopped. After the engine is stopped, when the gear shift lever is positioned at the neutral position or the parking position, the engine is restarted to the idle rotation when the foot is put on the acceleration pedal.
