PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video switching and compositing device that switches and composites a plurality of received SDTV and HDTV signals without making the control complicated and causing deviation in control timing. SOLUTION: A plurality of input terminals of a matrix changeover device 1 receive HDTV and SDTV signals. Specified input terminals of a matrix changeover device 1 are connected to output terminals of HD/SD signal converter 4 and an HD/SD signal converter 5 and output terminals of the matrix changeover device 1 are respectively connected to input terminals of an HD image composite section 3, an SD image composite section 4, the HD/SD signal converter 5 and an SD/HD signal converter 6. An input signal detection section 2 detects and identifies the signal received to each input terminal of the matrix changeover device 1 to output detection information denoting a signal form to a control section 7. The control section 7 applies switching control to the matrix changeover device 1 on the basis of control information from an external controller and the detection information from the input signal detection section 2.
