PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new image pickup unit, in which the focal distance of a lens is adjusted by an easy operation, so as to form an image of incident light on the photodetecting part of an image pickup device and with which a high image quality is obtained by fixing the lens after adjustment thereof, and to provide a focusing method thereof. SOLUTION: This image pickup unit possesses a lens 1 to converge the incident light, the imaging device (a semiconductor sensor 4) having the photodetecting part to convert converged light into an electric signal, a lens barrel 3, to which the lens 1 is movably attached to the image pickup device 4 and a translucent plate 7, which is fixed to the lens barrel 3 between the lens 1 and the image pickup device 4 and through which light from the lens 1 is transmitted. The lens barrel 3 is provided with an injecting hole 3b, through which gas is injected into the space formed between the translucent plate 7 and the lens 1, and the lens 1 is moved by injecting the gas through the injecting hole 3b, so that the lens 1 is fixed at the lens barrel 3 to set the focal position of the lens 1 at the photodetecting part.
