A coupling mechanism for assembly and sealing of pressure-bearing steel pipes closed with a flange half section. The flanges' inner contact faces are fashioned with concentric and cylindrical teeth, which upon axial compaction deform a conical metallic sealing ring, placed between the two inner contact faces. The assembly is further equipped with two tilted bevelled midrings, which makes it possible for full contact between the flange sections' outer contact faces to be made during set-up. Sealing is achieved through the use of a tensioner with powerful cross bolts, which are placed open over the ends of the pipes. In installation the tensioner is positioned vertically on the pipe ends placed together. The tensioner is closed through use of a leverage bar and afterward secured through tightening of the cross bolts. Assembly can be carried out through a primarily automated operation. The coupling mechanism can especially be used where a maintenance-free assembly of pressure-bearing steel pipes with difficult access is required. This can be, for example, in an assembly of pressure-bearing oil- or gas pipe conduits on the ocean floor.<IMAGE>
