PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for setting rail position, which facilitates rail position aligning work. SOLUTION: In a method wherein when the direction in which a pair of guide rails 2 extend is taken as the Z direction, and a plane orthogonal to the Z direction is taken as the X-Y plane, a pair of the guide rails 2 are set to positions in the X-Y plane in spaced relation at a specified interval and opposed to each other, a piano wire 40 extending in the Z direction is arranged at a position near each of the guide rails 2, and an exclusive tool 30, which is positioned in the X-Y plane in relation to the guide rails 2 and has a light beam irradiation device 32 capable of irradiating light beams in a specified direction, is secured. The rails position is set in a direction other than the torsion direction of the X-Y plane by aligning the datum line checking section 35 of the exclusive tool 30 with the piano wire 40, and the position of the X-Y plane in the torsion direction is set by aligning the light beam of the light beam irradiation device 32 with the piano wire 40 opposing thereto.
