PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silver halide emulsion having high sensitivity, ensuring a small variation of sensitivity due to difference in humidity condition in exposure and excellent in adaptability to the reciprocity law characteristics under high illuminance. SOLUTION: The silver halide emulsion has been chemically sensitized with a compound of the formula [L<1> -Au(I)-L<2> ]Mn<1> wherein Au (I) is monovalent gold; M is H or a counter cation; n is a numeral of 0-1; and L<1> and L<2> are selected from the compounds of formulae (2)-(5) wherein Ch<1> is S, Se or Te; A<1> is O, S or NR<4> ; R<1> -R<4> and R<10> -R<15> are each H or a substituent; X<1> is O, S or NR<5> ; Y<1> is H, an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, a heterocycilc group, OR<6> , SR<7> or N(R<8> )R<9> ; R<5> -R<9> are each H, an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl or a heterocyclic group; at least one of R<10> and R<11> is an electron withdrawing group; W<1> is an electron withdrawing group; R<3> may form a 5- to 7-membered ring together with R<1> or R<2> ; and X<1> and Y<1> or W<1> and R<13> may bond to each other to form a ring.
