PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device and a manufacturing method therefor wherein the mechanical strength of the liquid crystal device can be enhanced and a display unevenness can be satisfactorily prevented. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device wherein a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer is interposed between two plastic substrates with electrodes at least, one of which is transparent, is characterized in that the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition containing a non-crystalline polymer substance consisting of a mixture of viscous resin having 3,000-1,500,000 cPs bulk viscosity at 25 deg.C when the viscous resin is uncured and thermoplastic resin which is a solid at 25 deg.C and has number average molecular weight of 1,000-10,000 and a spacer. Thereby, the mechanical strength of the liquid crystal element can be enhanced and display unevenness due to the generation of secular display defects and rapid temperature change can be satisfactorily prevented.
