PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical device constituted so that the upper and lower allowable limits of a light beam emitted after being polarized may be easily detected by a detecting means. SOLUTION: The device is provided with detection mirrors M1 and M2 for detecting the upper limit position or the lower limit position arranged while shifting the positions with reference to the scanning light transmitted through a 2nd cylindrical lens 38 so that the scanning light beam may be moved, and the detection mirrors M1 and M2 are arranged so that the detection light from the detection mirrors M1 and M2 may be made incident on an optical synchronous sensor S0 for performing an optical synchronous detection.
