PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method/apparatus for affecting a toxic substance emission value and/or a noise emission value of an internal combustion engine so that limit values determined by law are maintained, the engine having fuel injection devices 10 driven and controlled accordingly by a controller 160, and the engine having a plurality of injectors 131 set to inject fuel into the cylinders of the engine. SOLUTION: A plurality of selected injectors are allocated to the respective fuel injection devices so as to have the passage of a characteristic curve that is as close to at least a predetermined portion of an injection quantity-drive time duration-characteristic curve EM (T) as possible. At least one adaptive measure is taken depending on the passage of the characteristic curve that is as close to the curve EM as possible, to affect the drive and control of the injectors by the controller.
