PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus which can exhibit a maximum color reproduction stress in an image output part. SOLUTION: The RGB signal of an input image is converted to an L*a*b* signal and subjected to background color correction by a background color correction part 30. A color space conversion part 32 has a color conversion circuit 44A for character mode, a color conversion circuit 44B for photographing mode, and a selector 42 for switching the L*a*b* signal to the color conversion circuit 44A or 44B as its output destination according to output mode data 40 indicative of any one of the character and photographing mode set. When the character mode is set, the L*a*b* signal is output to the color conversion circuit 44A where the signal is converted so that the color gamut of the input image coincides with that of the image output part 16. When the photograph mode is set, the L*a*b* signal is output to the color conversion circuit 44B where the signal is converted so that a color difference becomes minimum.
