PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the problem that, in a solar timepiece with illumination in which a solar cell and an EL light-emitting layer are provided on the lower surface of a translucent character plate at which an hour character is formed, a character plate around the hour character is illuminated and the hour character is hard to be recognized because it is blurred when the EL is lit as the hour character is in the shadow if it is small, resulting in posed limit on design. SOLUTION: A pointer display type timepiece comprises an illumination device such as an LED panel 5 with a solar cell 1 as a drive source. The solar cell is disposed under a translucent region 2 of a character plate 1 while the illumination device is disposed under an opaque region 3 with an opening. By using the opening as the hour character 4, a solar clock with illumination which is excellent in design can be presented. The opaque region 3 and the hour character 4 are printed to provide the hour characters such as a figure.
