PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a substrate for magnetic recording medium, which enables inexpensively manufacturing patterned media. SOLUTION: A linear structure body 4 made of a carbon compound is grown on an arbitrary place of a smooth base material 5 in the direction perpendicular to the base material and is pressed to a plastics substrate. A structure body obtained by growing the linear structure body 4 made of a carbon compound on an arbitrary place of the smooth base material 5 in the direction perpendicular to the base material is used as a stamper, and a substrate material like plastics is used to manufacture a holed substrate for patterned media by a molding method. Consequently, a member for manufacturing which has the linear structure body 4 formed on the base material 5 is pressed to the plastics substrate to collectively form holes of the patterned media substrate because the linear structure body 4 holes the plastics substrate.
