PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for mapping a digital data input value to an output exposure energy level when the number of possible output exposure energy levels exceeds the number of available digital data input values. SOLUTION: In this method for mapping a limited number of input data values to a large number of output exposure values of an electro-optical exposure device in a printing system (10) for a photosensitive medium (30), the electro-optical exposure device is profiled on the basis of a computed contrast ratio for the photosensitive medium (30), and its output exposure energy curve is adjusted to obtain desired exposure energy over the range of input values.
