PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bacterium belonging to the genus Rhodobacter, which is useful for environmental clean-up such as effluent treatment, etc., and is industrially available. SOLUTION: As a result of the search of new bacteria from freshwater lakes, marshes, activated sludge, etc., in which inhabitation of bacteria belonging to the genus Rhodobacter is predicted, Rhodobacter gluconicum AS-3 strain, a bacterium of a new species belonging to the genus Rhodobacter having excellent ability of assimilating various kinds of organic acids and saccharides is separated from strains from the aeration tank of activated sludge of a food plant. The AS-3 strain has properties of having no photosynthesis ability, not producing a colony coloring matter, having no motility, not retaining C14:0 and C17:0 as a cell body fatty acid but retaining C18:0-30H, not allowing the use of acetic acid and succinic acid as a carbon source but allowing the use of butyric acid, propionic acid, glucose and fructose as the only carbon source.
