PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate fine setting of an annular clearance between an outer tube and an inner tube, in a hydraulic shock absorber with a piston in sliding contact with an inner circumference of an inner tube. SOLUTION: The hydraulic shock absorber 10 with the piston 26 in sliding contact with an inner circumference of the inner tube 12 forms a sectional area S1 of an annular oil chamber 17 delimited by an inner circumference of the outer tube 11 and an outer circumference of the inner tube 12 larger than the sectional area of a piston rod 23. A partition member 19 arranged on the inner circumference of the inner tube 12 has a check valve for blocking a flow from an oil chamber 21 to an oil sump chamber 22 at an extension stroke, and has a micro passage 70 interconnecting the oil chamber 21 and the oil sump chamber 22.
